Meet Sarah Buchanan

Sarah joined the Fields of Life family at the start of April 2017 in the role of Child Sponsorship Administrator. We thought you would like to get to know her a little better…

Tell us a bit about yourself:

My background is in translation and linguistics, so I enjoy finding out about the ins and outs of different cultures and discovering ways in which we are both similar and different. I am from County Tyrone and I am a country person at heart, so I am delighted to be working inside a potato factory!

Another significant fact about me…I recently got married to José and we attend the Parish of Drumbeg where we are enjoying getting stuck into church life.

When did you first get involved with Fields of Life and Why?

I had heard a little bit about Fields of Life water projects through fundraising events, but I am discovering the full picture of the organisation on the job.

I previously worked at the Irish Council of Churches where I had the opportunity to meet representatives from many different Christian denominations and was excited by the potential of churches and community groups to effect change in the world, when they work together. Fields of Life provided me with another opportunity to work across the Christian community and see the practical ways in which ordinary people, working together, can love their neighbour and stand with people who may be otherwise marginalised.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

Apart from the lovely people I work with… one highlight has been reading children’s individual stories. For example, one young boy wrote about his ambition to be ‘a peace keeper’ when he grows up. This is a very hopeful picture for the future of East Africa.

Another highlight has been listening in on discussions around the East Africa Emergency Appeal (launched April 2017). It has been harrowing to hear about the crisis in which 2000 people flee across the border from South Sudan to Uganda every single day. Yet it has been exciting to learn about what Fields of Life is doing on the ground through our partners to provide water for those worst affected by this crisis.

I am just starting to get to know the many inspiring supporters and volunteers at FOL but I am looking forward to getting to know them better and hearing their stories.

What 3 words would you use to describe yourself?

Inquisitive, honest, relational
